Car

Hitra is located 130 km from Trondheim. Drive E 39 from Trondheim to Orkanger. From Orkanger, follow Rv 714 all the way to Hitra. Orkanger is located 40 km southwest of Trondheim. Rv 714 passes across Hitra and on to Frøya. In order to pass through the Hitra tunnel, which at 260m depth is one of Europe’s deepest tunnels, you need to pay a toll fee. On the trip to Hitra you will experience varied nature with plenty of large mountains, fjord arms, angling lakes, waterfalls, red deer and plenty more. There is also no charge to pass through the subsea tunnel from Hitra to Frøya.

Bus

The bus company Trønderbilene offers daily departures from Trondheim to Hitra and Frøya. See www.tronderbilene.no for timetable.

Boat

Kystekspressen is an express boat that will take you to Hitra from Trondheim or Kristiansund. Hitra is located in the middle between Trondheim and Kristiansund. The boat trip takes approx. two hours. The boat passes a number of picturesque sites, so lean back and enjoy the ride. See

 Plane

Trondheim Airport Værnes is the closest major airport and is located 160 kilometers from Hitra. For information about flights, etc., see www.trondheimlufthavn.no Direct flights are available from the following destinations: London, Prague, Murcia, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Dubrovnik, Amsterdam, Nice, Alicante, Riga, Malaga, Split, Warszawa. There is also an airport for small aircraft at Frøya.

Hitra - When you want to...
 
The island Hitra is the seventh largest (excluding Svalbard) and the largest south of the Lofoten Islands. Øyas land areas is 571.5 km ², while the the council area is 680 km ². The highest point is Mørkdalstuva, 345 metres above sea level. and is located on the west side of the island. Topographi, vegetation and animal life is varied. Along the coast towards the south, west and north is the nature marked by rough coastal climate with the naked heather moors. In the interior of the island can be found pine forests, mountain terrain and large flats of swamp with rich bird life. The Havmyran nature was protected as a nature reserve in 1982 and covers the well 40 km ² untouched landscape in the interior of the island. www.hitra.kommune.no

Frøya

Frøya - The islands against the big ocean!

The landscape on Frøya is characterized by low forest, hilly landscape with a lot of swamp, mountain and water. It is planted significant amounts of wood several places. Frøya is relatively flat, with Bremnestua 74 metres above sea level as one of the highest points.
